Elon Musk Slams Trump’s New Budget Bill as ‘A National Embarrassment’

Tech mogul Elon Musk
has once again made headlines — this time for publicly condemning former US President Donald Trump’s newly proposed tax and spending legislation, One Big Beautiful Bill Act, labelling it "a national embarrassment".

Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (4 June), Musk didn’t hold back.

“I can’t take it anymore. This Congressional budget bill is loaded with waste and special interests. Shame on anyone supporting it — you know it’s wrong,” Musk wrote, triggering a storm of reactions across political and tech communities.

The explosive remarks follow the US House of Representatives' approval of the bill, which is now under Senate review. If passed, it’s projected to add up to US$3.8 trillion to the national debt over the next decade — a figure that has alarmed fiscal conservatives and industry leaders alike.

One of the most controversial provisions in the bill is the removal of the US$7,500 federal tax credit for the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles. On top of that, a new annual tax would be imposed on EV owners, effectively penalising green vehicle adoption.

Critics argue the policy is a step backwards for the clean energy movement — and for companies like Tesla, which have thrived under the current tax incentive structure.

For Musk, the bill directly threatens the EV industry's momentum and undermines years of work in promoting sustainable transport.

“This bill doesn’t just hurt Tesla — it hurts every American who wants clean air and affordable transport,” said Musk in a follow-up thread. “It's anti-innovation and anti-future.”

What makes Musk’s stance particularly newsworthy is his historical alignment with Trump and the Republican party. In recent years, Musk has spoken favourably of Trump’s deregulation agenda and economic policies. However, this bill appears to have pushed him to a tipping point.

Musk even went so far as to issue a political warning: if Republicans continue to support the bill, he would use his platform to mobilise voters against them in the next election.

“In November next year, we’ll vote out every politician who betrayed the American people,” Musk declared, suggesting a broader political shift may be underway.

While Musk's influence is strongest in tech circles, his recent criticism could resonate with a wider public already concerned about debt, inflation, and policy inconsistency around climate initiatives.

As the bill moves through the Senate, pressure is mounting — not just from traditional political opposition but from powerful private sector voices like Musk’s, who are no longer afraid to clash with their former allies.

Whether this fiery intervention will shift votes in the Senate or the electorate in 2026 remains to be seen. One thing is clear: Elon Musk isn’t pulling punches when it comes to defending the future he believes in.
