Dozens of US Lawmakers Urge DOJ to Probe Trump’s Memecoin Dinner for Foreign Influence
More than 35 members of the US House of Representatives have formally requested that the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigate a private dinner event held by former President Donald Trump with top holders of the TRUMP memecoin, citing serious concerns over foreign influence and potential breaches of campaign finance laws.
The event in question, which took place on Friday, 24 May at Trump National Golf Club, gathered prominent memecoin investors—reportedly including a significant number of foreign nationals. Attendees were promised exclusive access to the former President, sparking concerns that the dinner may have crossed legal boundaries and ethical lines.
In their official letter to the DOJ, the lawmakers pointed to constitutional clauses and federal campaign laws that prohibit presidents from accepting gifts or anything of value from foreign entities without congressional approval. The letter states that this gathering may have violated the Foreign Emoluments Clause and Federal Election Campaign Act.
“US law prohibits foreign nationals from contributing to US political campaigns. Yet the TRUMP memecoin, including its marketing for a dinner promising exclusive access to a former president, opens the door for foreign governments to purchase influence — all without disclosing their identities,” the statement read.
Sources close to the investigation say the majority of dinner guests were non-US citizens, raising further concerns about transparency, influence-buying, and regulatory oversight in the evolving crypto-political landscape.
The dinner was part of a promotional campaign by World Liberty Financial (WLFI), the entity behind the TRUMP memecoin. Token holders with significant holdings were granted invitations, while the top 25 wallets reportedly received additional perks, including a private tour of the White House grounds.
Lawmakers are calling for a full-scale probe into whether this type of crypto-based fundraising, tied to direct access to political figures, violates existing campaign finance laws and enables untraceable influence from foreign actors.
This development adds yet another layer to the already complex relationship between cryptocurrency, politics, and transparency in the United States. As memecoins gain popularity among retail and institutional investors alike, legal experts warn that these assets could easily become vehicles for illicit influence or opaque fundraising.
As pressure mounts, all eyes are on the DOJ and how it plans to respond to the congressional inquiry, which may set new precedents in crypto regulation and political accountability.
